Valentine's Party Information

Valentine’s Day Celebration

Dear Parents,

On Tuesday, February 14th, from 12:30 to 3:20, our class will be celebrating Valentine’s Day.  I believe that valuing and respecting the friendship of others is one key to developing healthy and productive young children!  Our Valentine’s Day party, aside from being lots of fun, will be used to encourage the value of friendship.
All students, if participating, are required to bring a store-bought or homemade Valentine for each member of our class.  (I have attached a list of the students’ names.)  Our class will spend time during the party passing out and reading Valentine’s, decorating and eating sugar cookies, watching a Valentine’s Day video, listening to stories, and playing games.

If you do not want your child to participate, please sign and return the form below.

If your child, WILL be participating, your child’s Valentine’s can be filled out and brought to school any time before the party!

Thank you,

Mrs. Jacobs

I do not want my child, ________________________________, to participate in the Valentine’s celebration.

 A Note from B-3!

Monday, January 30, 2012

Parents,

As I write this, I am a little perplexed to think how January has come and gone so quickly!!??  One more month until we track off!!??  How could that be???  Let’s work really hard and really push ourselves before we track off!!

Things to note:
  • The school-wide book fair begins on Thursday!  You may choose to shop with your child before or after school any day during the book fair.  Also, on our library day (Thursday) you may send money in with your first grader.  Mrs. P., myself, or other parent volunteers will help them to choose books within their price range.  Please, however, don’t feel obligated in send in money.  Students are often, just as entertained, to look through all the choices, and then touch base with you when they come home to let you know what they had their eyes on!!  You could plan to come back another day to shop WITH them!  Let me know if you have any questions.
  • Our music teacher, Mrs. McKinnon has scheduled our music program!  Please put it on your calendar!  Wednesday, February 29th, our class, along with Miss Graham’s class will be performing on the stage at 2:00.   Come grab a seat in the lunch room.  Your first grader has been practicing hard and they are extremely cute!  Should be fun to watch!!!!!!  As a request from Mrs. McKinnon, please encourage your child to wear nice clothes on the day of our performance.
  • Notices for Valentine Grams came home today.  Fill out gram, with message, student name and teacher, send in $1.00 for each gram, and on Valentine’s Day, a smelly Smencil and your V-Day message will be delivered to the recipient of your choice!
  • Please look for attached Valentine’s Day party information.  Student Valentines can be filled out and brought to school any time before our party on Tuesday, February 14th.   Big thanks to those parents who are able to send in supplies! =)
  • As I prepare for tracking off, I will be preparing a track-off packet for each child in our class (because everyone chose to have one last time—Great job, Brainiacs!!).  Rewards will be similar to last track off month.  Please know that students are not required to finish the packet…any work that is completed is awesome!!  If you know that you or your child are not interested in receiving a packet for the break, please let me know, otherwise, I will plan to make one for them.  Packets will come home the week we are tracking off.
  • Please check my blog to see an online copy of our weekly notes while the school’s new website is under construction... mrsjacobs1stgrade.blogspot.com

January 23, 2012 ~ Winter has arrived! Yay for snow!!

 A Note from B-3!

Monday, January 23, 2012

Parents,

Yay!  There is snow!  I have to say, the snow on the mountains actually makes it feel like winter!  Hopefully, this is just the beginning of our wintery weather!!

Things to note:
  • The school-wide book fair is quickly approaching!  Mrs. Pawliszyn (our librarian) is looking for parents willing to volunteer in the library during this time.  She needs help with cash registers, organizing, helping students to buy books, etc.  Please email her if you can donate some of your time!  It helps so much!!!
                            lpawliszyn@washoeschools.net
  • For the last few weeks, we have been taking our second series of MAPs tests in the computer room during our computer time.  I am happy with the results because everyone has shown growth!  Yeehaw!  I have to say, however, that the consensus throughout first grade here at S.S.E.S. and throughout the district is that first graders scores are being bogged down by their lack of computer skills. The MAP test requires first graders to manipulate the mouse and move things around on the computer screen in ways they have never had to do before (at least in computer class at school).
o   We are moving into a new era of testing…everything is being done on the computer!  This is amazing and fabulous, while also challenging because these skills have to be learned!  We have asked the district if we (all of first grade) can practice taking parts of the test to increase our ability to manipulate the mouse, get accustomed to the computer models, etc., however we have been given a BIG, FAT…NO!!!  This means…we, as a first grade, are asking parents and families to sit with your child and work with them on their computer skills, mouse skills, listening to directions given by computer, etc.
o   Some of you may have a computer and some of you may not.  Some of you may have time to spend doing extra things like this at night/weekends and some of you may already feel crunched for time.  It feels, however, like this is the direction that all testing is going.  Please think about adding some computer games (educational hopefully!!!) to your repertoire of at home activities.  Thanks sooo much!
o   If you need educational websites, myself or our computer aide, Mrs. Mahlin, can help provide some options.

MLK, Jr. ~ January 17, 2012

 A Note from B-3!

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Parents,

Your first graders and I talked a lot about the reason for our extra day off this week.  I hope some of you were or are able to continue that conversation at home.  Martin Luther King, Jr. was a brave and courageous individual that stood up for what was right and just in this world.  He fought peacefully, but demanded that ALL were deserving of the same rights.  M.L.K., Jr. Day may have passed but please continue to remind your first grader to be brave, courageous, and stand up for what is right!  M.L.K., Jr.’s life is always shocking to little ones!  It is hard for them to believe that people were treated SO poorly and it is always hard to believe that he was SO brave.  You never know…your first grader may be the next great activist and prominent leader to change the world!

Things to note:
  • Just before break, a packet went home explaining the upcoming school-wide Science Fair on February 7th.  Please make sure that you have read through that packet or that you look for that information on the school website!  Please think about creating a science fair project with your first grader.  They can be very simple or complex…you decide!  It is a wonderful way to engage in real learning with your child!  Let me know if you need more information or if I can help you in any way!
  • I am already planning away on our upcoming Valentine’s Party.  I did not have a parent sign up to organize it, so I will be taking care of the organizing myself.  I  will be planning a fun but simple party.  I have several parents already signed up to bring in supplies….but if you think you might also be available to bring in supplies…let me know.  I will be in touch to let you know what we will need! =)  FYI…our party will be held in the afternoon on Tuesday, February 14.

Welcome to 2012! January 9, 2012

 A Note from B-3!

Monday, January 9, 2012!!

Parents,

Welcome back!  I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays with their families!!  I thoroughly enjoyed spending my time off with my husband, Mark, and our 5 and 3 year old.  It was pretty magical at our house this year!!!
As experienced first graders, we are ready to kick it up a notch and push ourselves even harder.  We have about 4 ½ months (excluding our track off month of March) to do all we can to prepare ourselves for 2nd grade.  Let’s do this!!

Things to note:
  • We will resume business as usual this week…reading log, math homework, high frequency word test on Thursday, and spelling test on Friday.  Please be reminded that this spelling test will be a little more rigorous than they have been up till now.  I will begin counting words wrong for reversals or letters not formed correctly (Please see parent letter attached.  This is the same letter that went home after your child’s first spelling test back in September.  Right now is what we have been working towards.  Please remind your first grader to work their hardest and make letters correctly.  Please know that this process might be difficult at first for your first grader, however, we want them ready for second grade in just 4 ½ months!)
  • We have officially received enough paper towel rolls for one of our upcoming projects.  Thank you for sending them in!
